Book Release & Review: Lyrics & Curses

Title: Lyrics & Curses

Series: Cursed Hearts

Author: Candace Robinson

Release Date: November 11, 2020

Blurb:

Lark Espinoza could get lost in her music—and she’s not so sure anyone in her family would even care to find her. Her trendy, party-loving twin sister and her mother-come-lately Beth, who’s suddenly sworn off men and onto homemaking, don’t understand her love of cassette tapes, her loathing of the pop scene, or her standoffish personality. For outcast Lark, nothing feels as much like a real home as working at Bubble’s Oddities store and trying to attract the attention of the cute guy who works at the Vinyl shop next door—the same one she traded lyrical notes with in class.

Auden Ellis silences the incessant questions in his own head with a steady stream of beats. Despite the unconditional love of his aunt-turned-mother, he can’t quit thinking about the loss of his parents—or the possibility he might end up afflicted with his father’s issues. Despite his connection with lyric-loving Lark, Auden keeps her at arm’s length because letting her in might mean giving her a peek into something dangerous.

When two strangers arrive in town, one carrying a mysterious, dark object and the other playing an eerie flute tune, Lark and Auden find that their painful pasts have enmeshed them in a cursed future. Now, they must come to terms with their budding attraction while helping each other challenge the reflection they see in the mirror. If they fail, they’ll be trapped for eternity in a place beyond reality.

*Set in 1985 and full of nostalgia! Perfect for fans of Stranger Things and Pretty in Pink.

My Review:

Definitely a favorite book of mine! I’ve read it at least 4 “full” times, and I am NOT sick of it!!! I could read it four more times!!! I love this book!!!

First of all, the 80s theme was so cool!!! Being an 80s girl myself I was taken back in time. It was written extremely detailed as far as the 80s setting. Second, the lyrics!!!! All 80s, of course, but I especially love how she wove the lyrics throughout the story and Lark & Auden’s relationship. The paranormal mystery aspects built up as the story went. But as it goes along we are given some background into the characters and where they come from, and how that has shaped who they become. As the paranormal mystery builds up we see Lark and Auden growing closer, through lyrics and through solving the mystery, and they come to find exactly how much they mean to each other. I love it, because this story is the beginning and the foundation of the series. Bring on the next book!!

Book Release: Lion (Faeries of OZ)

Title: Lion (Faeries of OZ)

Series: Faeries of OZ

Authors: Candace Robinson & Amber R Duell

Langwidere has an obsessive habit—collecting heads. She wears a new one each day, changing them out like she does her ivory dresses. But Landwidere doesn’t have the one thing she truly wants: complete power over the territories in Oz. When Lion—the once cowardly fae—shows up at her doorstep, he offers her an opportunity to achieve her desires. Will he use the courage the Wizard gave him to help her succeed, or will he betray her in the process?

This is a short story prequel to the Faeries of Oz trilogy.

Purchasehttps://www.amazon. com/dp/B08FT5SSJW/

My Review:

This is a short little prequel to help you understand Lion & Landwidere before reading the first book in the series. It’s basically a dark romance horror story. It is important in order to understand these characters and their role in Tin. It’s pretty freaky and very descriptive. The authors did a great job at setting up their motives and their relationship with each other, and also their feelings toward Dorothy. It is short, but flows perfectly into Tin. This is already an amazing series and I’ve only read Lion & Tin!! I’m dying for more!!!!

REVIEW: Mortal Scream

Title: Mortal Scream

Series: Harbingers Of Death

Authors: L.B. Carter & LeAnn Mason

Release Date: September 8, 2020

Summary:

Don’t get caught. It’s the most important lesson… and I failed.

Living life on the move and under the radar, you’d think I’d know not to scream when witnessing a murder. It should be a no-brainer, but my mouth didn’t get the memo, drawing the cops to the wrong conclusion: me.

And the deaths don’t stop there.

When I foresee the demise of one of the officers, my open trap catches the attention of one of the scariest gangs in the whole prison. But they’re not concerned with me — they want the guard.

They say they’re a supernatural team tasked with overseeing the mortal sentence of convicted criminals… and apparently, I’m just like them. A Harbinger of Death.

I thought getting locked up was the worst my life could get. Lesson learned.

***For fans of Dannika Dark, Jennifer L. Armentrout, and Burn Notice comes a gritty NA tale of self-discovery, mysterious pasts, and slow-burn romance with snarky shifters, gorgeous Egyptian gods, and quirky creatures of Greek and Celtic mythology.***

Available at AMAZON

My Review:

This book hooked me from the very beginning and didn’t let go…I need book two!!

The characters were all super interesting to learn about. I loved the MC. Aria the Banshee, was an awesome character! You couldn’t help but feel for everything she had been through growing up, and all that she was going through in the prison. Her character is who pulled me in and kept me invested. As for the Harbingers of Death team in the prison…they were very interesting characters, but I felt no fondness for them at all. Maybe that was the authors plan in writing the first book.

The writing was really well done. Two writers writing with a similar voice is very enjoyable. And these two authors wrote from one to the next so smoothly, it’s hard to notice, especially if you’re not real familiar with at least one of the author’s work. The dialogue was extremely well played out, which is super important in a character driven book.

I love paranormal & mythology books. So many cool characters, and all of them Harbingers of Death made it even cooler!!! I am really looking forward to the next book in the series and seeing were it goes from here!!!

Release Blitz: HART OF VENGEANCE by S.B. Alexander

Love is the deadliest enemy of all.
Convicted murderer Denim Hart swears he didn’t kill one of the most notorious gang leaders in Boston. When he’s released, his first order of business is to clear his name. But he has no clue where to begin. The only witness who could help him disappeared before his trial began.
He might not need the witness when the FBI offers him a deal to expunge his record in exchange for his help. But Denim isn’t a snitch, and no way is he interested in helping The Feds take down his older brother. No matter how many times Denim tells them no, he’s caught in the middle with no way out.
Yet, the FBI is the least of his worries. There’s a contract out on his head. Now, his plan to reconnect with the woman who tortured his dreams for the last eight years is thwarted. Under no circumstances can he let her back into his life. Not until it’s safe.
If Jade Kelly doesn’t find a job soon, her next home will be in some dark alley in Boston. It’s critical she doesn’t screw up her interview with one of the most prestigious law firms in the city. Getting the job might be easy, but keeping it quite another, especially when she learns her potential boss, Kelton Maxwell, is representing the one man she never expected to see again—the one man who walked away from her in high school. The same man who’s incarcerated for murder.
As soon as Denim reappears in Jade’s life, she’s unsure if she should run for the hills or run straight into his arms. She could never resist his seductive charm, and she quickly learns it’s not his sexy ass she needs to run from, but the dangerous gang leader who wants her dead.
Hart of Vengeance is a standalone second chance romance. If you love nail-biting suspense, family drama, a bad-boy hero, a story with twists and turns, and set on the dark streets of Boston, then you’ll love Denim and Jade’s HEA story.
This book is suited for mature audiences.

Kelton Maxwell’s jaw dropped to the table when he saw me. But mine hit the fucking floor when my gaze rounded to the woman sitting next to him. Her silky black hair hung wild and free, and her shiny emerald-green eyes stared back at me. Her round tits appeared bigger than I remembered, and those lips were made to tempt any man, gay or straight.

Her red lips curled slightly, making my knees buckle.

What is Jade Kelly doing here?

My high school days came roaring back with a vengeance. The blood rushed south like a river swollen after a violent storm, causing my dick to throb.

Farley practically pushed me toward the table. “Sit your ass down.”

That was probably a good idea since my dick was growing. I stumbled to the lone chair, not taking my eyes off Jade. My heart punched my ribs as hard as Costa had rammed his fists into my face and gut.

“What happened to you?” Kelton’s voice was deep and commanding, but not enough to make me take my eyes off Jade, who looked everywhere but at me.

A halo shined around her, or maybe it was the light spilling in from the window. Either way, she was an angel. My angel. I’d often lain in my bunk at night, thinking of her, wondering if she was married, had kids, and if she still hated me.

I would give anything to know what was going through her head. The last time I’d seen her was a year before I’d gotten arrested. She’d been walking into a restaurant with her friend Mallory in Roxbury. I’d been in the area, making a drop to a client. I’d almost stopped to say hi, but she had seemed happy, and I couldn’t shit on her happiness.

Kelton snapped his fingers. “Did you hear me? When did you get into a fight? And why didn’t you tell me?”

Jade stared at her blank notepad as her mouthwatering chest rose and fell, drawing my attention to her voluptuous breasts.

I dropped into the chair, but my brain wandered down memory lane, flashing through times when she and I had been naked.

Motherfucker.

Getting laid would be icing on a bare cake. I had a strong urge to kick Kelton out of the room until I could fuck Jade senseless.

“You’re not listening.” Kelton tried to get my attention for the third time.

Jade lifted her head and peeked at me through her long lashes. Desire flashed in her bright emerald orbs.

My dick jerked as I swallowed the sand coating the back of my throat.

“Farley, we’re good,” Kelton said.

No, we weren’t. I wasn’t. With Jade in the room, I wouldn’t be able to concentrate.

There goes my parole hearing.

I mentally shook off images of my girl naked. If I couldn’t get those thoughts out of my head, I would jack off and not care that Kelton and Jade were watching me.

Kelton cleared his throat. “Let’s start again. What happened to you? This will not look good at your parole hearing on Friday.”

The connection between Jade and me snapped. “Why did the parole board postpone?”

“It doesn’t matter,” Kelton said. “It’s in three days, and I’m worried about your appearance.”

“I’ll borrow some makeup from one of the gumps.”

A crease formed in between Jade’s eyebrows. The woman was in for a treat if she wanted to hear about the gay men in prison. But she didn’t need to hear about any of that. She was too pure and innocent.

“Denim.” Kelton’s voice hardened. “How do you expect to display good behavior when your face looks like you ran into an eighteen-wheeler? Is any of this going on your record? Again, why didn’t you inform me?”

I interlocked my fingers in front of me. “No. The warden gave me a pass. And what could you have done if you knew? Besides, I’m healing. You should’ve seen me two weeks ago.”

Jade fidgeted with her pen.

The butterflies inside my stomach were having a fucking party.

“So she works for you?” I asked Kelton.

Jade narrowed her eyes in my direction. Her ball-squeezing emerald eyes penetrated me as if she were trying to take a peek into my black soul. “I have a name.” Her knuckles were white as her delicate fingers clenched her pen.

I’d always loved when she got feisty. Her cute nose twitched, and for some reason that drove me insane with wanting to rip off her clothes.

“Since when do you like the law?” I asked Jade. “I thought you wanted to be a teacher?” She’d talked nonstop about teaching elementary school one day.

Kelton opened his leather binder. “We don’t have time for reminiscing. Save that for if you get parole.”

Jade swallowed, her throat working as she poised her pen over paper.

Please write me a love note like you used to do in high school. I’d always gotten off when she slipped me a note in class, particularly when she’d scribbled the words “I want to fuck you.”

Grateful for the barrier of the table, I lowered my cuffed hands to my lap and adjusted my rock-hard cock.

“Dillon will be at your hearing,” Kelton started. “You’re allowed a family member to speak on your behalf. The board will ask you questions like why you think you should be paroled. Do you have living arrangements? How will you manage challenges? What does your future look like? Are you ready to answer those questions?”

After seeing Jade for the first time in years, I was ready to blow this pop stand because, suddenly, I had a newfound goal in mind. Get out. Track down Jade. Rekindle our relationship.

My Review:

I love Denim Hart!! ❤️ After reading Dillon Hart’s story I had been dying for his brother, Denim’s. I was not disappointed in the least!!

Denim and Jade’s story is a second-chance romance, with plenty of suspense, mystery, family, emotion and lots of heart (and Harts!)
Duke Hart…I wanted to deck him at the beginning and now I’m just still trying to figure him out. But one thing for sure, I can’t wait for his story!!

If you like romantic suspense with lots of heart, then you need to read The Hart series, three books about three brothers. Each book is a standalone, but tied in with the stories of the one before it. You will fall in love with the Hart brothers!!!!

Bestselling author S.B. Alexander writes young adult and new adult romances that span the sub-categories of coming of age, sports, paranormal, suspense, and military fiction. Her writing is emotional, angsty, and character driven. She’s best known for The Maxwell and The Maxwell Family Saga series.
S.B. or Susan as she likes to be called is a navy veteran, former high school teacher, and former corporate sales executive. She’s a lover of sports, especially baseball, although nowadays you can find her glued to the TV during football season.
When she’s not writing, she’s a full-time caregiver to her soul mate of twenty-one years who got a bad deal in life when he was diagnosed with ALS. Her motto: “Life is too short to waste. So live every moment like it’s your last.”

Candace Robinson

Candace spends her days consumed by words and hoping to one day find her own DeLorean time machine. Her life consists of avoiding migraines, admiring Bonsai trees, watching classic movies, and living with her husband and daughter in Texas—where it can be forty degrees one day and eighty the next! Now let’s find out how this very versatile writer ticks:

Hi Candace,

BookDragonGirlDoes writing energize or exhaust you?

Candace Robinson – For me, first draft is the most exhausting because I just want to have something done so I can break apart and re-piece together! Like creating my own Frankenstein’s Monster! Once the first draft is done, things get much easier!

BookDragonGirl“It’s alive!” Love me some Frankenstein’s monster references!
How long on average does it take you to write a book?

Candace RobinsonFirst draft is pretty fast. Normally under a month! But, sometimes my first drafts are also pretty short!

BookDragonGirlWell, Is there lots to do before you dive in and start writing the story?

Candace RobinsonI don’t outline so not really. I basically know how many chapters are going to be in the story and basic scenes, but sometimes things take a turn in a totally different direction than I had originally planned.

BookDragonGirlDo you have beta readers, and do you listen to their feedback?

Candace RobinsonYes! I have some awesome beta readers. I do listen to their feedback, because the ones on my team have awesome ideas and understand my story and writing.

BookDragonGirlWhere do you get your information or ideas for your books?

Candace RobinsonSometimes I’m inspired by movies or music, then I try to weave in my own spin on things.

BookDragonGirlOoh…that’s interesting!! What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?

Candace RobinsonTo be patient. I can’t build a whole story in one day!

BookDragonGirl – This is book two in the Laith world. What was the inspiration for this story? Also, are any of the characters from Clouded By Envy in this book?

Candace RobinsonFor Tavarra’s character, It was loosely inspired by The Little Mermaid meets The Wolf Man. The only character from Clouded By Envy is the Stone of Desire. But! There is a distant relative down the line, Rhona, who is related from some of the characters from Clouded!

BookDragonGirlOh, this sounds extremely interesting! The Little Mermaid meets The Wolf Man! We are intrigued by that description! Now does one of the main characters hold a special place in your heart? If so, why?

Candace RobinsonFor Veiled, I would have to say Rhona and Quil. I just love their relationship when they are together so much.

BookDragonGirlWhat is the future for the characters? Will there be a sequel?

Candace RobinsonTwo of the characters from Veiled have POVs in the final book, Shadowed By Despair!

BookDragonGirlYay! That’s exciting! Shadowed By Despair has it’s cover reveal today too! Do you have any other new series planned?

Candace RobinsonI have a YA book titled, Lyrics & Curses, coming out next year! It’s a paranormal/fantasy romance set in 1985!

BookDragonGirlOoh…maybe you will get your DeLorean!! Okay, do you feel like it’s most important to have A) Strong characters B) Mind-blowing Plot twists or C) Epic settings?

Candace RobinsonPretty much all my books are character driven so, for me, I’d say strong characters!

BookDragonGirlYes they are, and I’m a character driven reader! What’s the most difficult thing about writing characters from the opposite sex?

Candace RobinsonI actually haven’t had a problem writing from a male POV yet! I don’t know why it comes naturally for me, but it just does. At least from my end! Readers may think differently lol!

BookDragonGirlWell I just think you’re an awesome writer, and where characters are your strong point, then that may be why you have no problem.

Thank you so much, Candace, for letting us into your writing world for a little while. Now how about an excerpt from Veiled by Desire?!

As Tavarra tried to leave the gravitational pull of the powerful ocean waves, each one crashed and pounded against her strong body. She swished through the murky sea, her tail flicking at the rough current as the liquid attempted to haul her back into its clutches.

Tonight was a chance for her to escape the haunting depths she so desperately dreamed of leaving behind. Tavarra pushed her head out of the sea’s liquid claws, finally finding herself near the sandy shore. She took a deep breath through her mouth, no longer needing the gills etched on each side of her neck.

Holding steady, she stared through the last rays of the waning day, searching for him. But the young man wasn’t anywhere in her line of sight yet. Keeping on top of the liquid swells, her gaze fixed on the caramel-colored sand. As her arms repeatedly cut through the vigorous surge, a hint of desperation filled her—she couldn’t get swallowed back up. At last, her body struck the grainy granules, swept in blackness.

She sighed in relief.

With no time to spare, Tavarra dragged her exhausted body by her forearms across the sand. Each tiny grain rubbed against the delicate skin between her fingers and nails. She came to a halt and rolled herself to a sitting position, letting the edge of a cool wave caress the end of her tangerine tail. Bony plates fused together with a fleshy covering lined the tail’s body, and the tip came to a curled point.

A heavy breath forced its way out and tugged harshly at her lungs. “Goodbye,” she whispered, half to herself and half to the ocean cage that, for seventeen years, had never been a true home. “Please let this happen.” Tavarra’s heart pounded rapidly, and had it beaten any harder, her sternum would have cracked.

Bringing her sandy hands to her waist, she glided them down her moistened tawny skin until they met the vivid exoskeleton. The silver of the twin moons shone down in answer, as if telling her it would work. It must work.

Tavarra had recently heard a tale of when the twin moons would rise, there would be a way for her sea dweller kind to truly walk the land of Laith. She desired it with everything in her. If this worked, she would never return to the watery home—her underwater grave.

Slowly, she slid her thumb beneath the soft plates of her tail. To her surprise, the tail pushed away from her skin, as if it were never a part of her at all. She thought there would be pain, but there wasn’t, only a filmy residue left behind.

Tavarra’s lips pulled up on each side, and she let out a rumbling, giddy laugh to the moons, to the ocean, and to herself. Tugging the tail a little more, she shimmied out from the exoskeleton and found smooth bare legs underneath—as she had hoped. The story had been right. If only she knew sooner that legs rested beneath the tail—then she could have been doing this every time the moons were at their fullest. A continuation of delighted laughter echoed from her as it bounced off the waves and into the darkened forest.

She kicked these new-found creations, releasing the legs in their entirety from the confined appendage. To her it felt natural, more than surreal.

90C8B53F-60CC-4117-A95C-EED8B07E0471

This book has everything. Romance, Mystery, Suspense, Adventure and Action. I’m sure i am missing something more, but it was definitely a romantic, steamy, suspenseful, keep you on the edge of your seat, book.

Dillon Hart…yummy! What a beautiful man! He has a heart of Gold, but when it comes to sex he becomes a tiger, and if anyone touches his family…especially his woman he becomes a dragon!!! He’s gorgeous, caring, sensual, sexy as heck, and he’s strong, powerful and knows how to fight. I mean what more could you ask for?!!!

Maggie Marx, reporter, sexy and strong. I really like Maggie. I wasn’t sure i would in the beginning. I get tired of these strong women characters who are so strong that they feel they don’t need a man, and they don’t. But that wasn’t Maggie, she is strong from her history. But she’s not as strong and independent as she thinks she is. We get to see her vulnerability. I love that.

All the characters in this book were written so well. Learning about Dillon’s family life, growing up, the things he, his two brothers and his sister went through. The family is disjointed and Dillon wants so much to find his sister, Grace, not knowing what has happened to her after all these years. Denim is in prison for a murder he did not commit, and Duke is involved is criminal activities. I am really looking forward to their stories!! But i have a hard time imagining falling in love with Denim & Duke the way i did with Dillon!!

I’m Susan Alexander, and you’ll find my books under S.B. Alexander. A little about me. I’ve been writing since 2012 and started with writing all about vampires. After the second vampire book, I began to branch out in New Adult Romance. I love to read mostly all genres, and I’m always game to try something new. So I tested my hand at writing romantic suspense and just loved it. So you’ll find I write in several different sub-genres of romance.

In between writing, I spend time with my soul mate of 20 years who got a bad deal in life. Three years ago he was diagnosed with ALS. It’s a horrible disease, but we both have been making the best of life, laughing, smiling, and doing what we can together.

But writing is a great outlet for me to take my mind to another place. Plus, I have a great network of family, friends, fans, and so much more. I truly have an angel on my shoulder. My mantra is make the best of life because it’s too darn short.

Early Release: All Grown Up by Vi Keeland

ALL GROWN UP IS LIVE!

A Standalone Contemporary Romance

#1 New York Times Bestselling Author Vi Keeland

SYNOPSIS

When I first encountered Ford Donovan, I had no idea who he was…well, other than the obvious. Young, gorgeous, successful, smart. Did I mention young? If I did, it bears repeating. Ford Donovan was too young for me.

Let’s back up to how it all started. My best friend decided I needed to start dating again. So, without my knowledge, she set up a profile for me on a popular dating site—one that invited men ages twenty-one to twenty-seven to apply for a date. Those nicknamed Cunnilingus King were told they’d go straight to the top for consideration. The profile wasn’t supposed to go live. Another point that bears repeating—it wasn’t supposed to.

Nevertheless, that’s how I met Ford, and we started messaging. He made me laugh; yet I was adamant that because of his age, we could only be friends. But after weeks of wearing me down, I finally agreed to one date only—my first after twenty years of being with my high school sweetheart. I knew it couldn’t last, but I was curious about him.

Though, you know what they say…curiosity kills the cat.

My legs wobbled walking into the restaurant.

Ford was seated at the bar. When he turned around, he took my breath away.

His sexy smile nearly melted my panties.

But…he looked so familiar.

As I got closer I realized why.

He was the son of the neighbor at our family’s summer home.

The boy next door.

Only now…he was all man.

I hadn’t seen him in years.

I left the restaurant and planned to put the entire crazy thing behind me.

Which I did. Until summer came.

And guess who decided to use his family’s summer home this year?

It’s difficult taking care of a delusional father by yourself. Sixteen-year-old Shaleigh Mallet would rather explore and photograph dilapidated buildings than cater to her father’s dark episodes. But when she’s kidnapped by a creature who carries her atop a flying bicycle into another world, she realizes this wasn’t the escape she wanted.

In a kingdom known as the Garden, where minotaurs pull carriages and parties are held in hot air balloons, Madam Cloom and her faerie servant, Teagan, rule over the land with incredible but terrifying magic. Shaleigh must prove that she is the reincarnation of a long-dead ruler, not because she believes it, but because it’s her only chance to survive. With the help of a trespassing faerie, a stoatling, and a living statue, Shaleigh hopes to outwit everyone. She aims to break the bonds of servitude and finally make her way home. What she doesn’t realize, however, is that she’s playing right into the hands of a far worse enemy…

MY REVIEW

THIS WAS THE MOST UNIQUE, FASCINATING, BRILLIANT STORY!! The world building!!! It is so well written, enough detail that it paints a wonderful picture in the imagination, where you now start building upon it with your own interpretation!! Which to me is perfection! That is what i want from a book. This world where there are Faeries, Minotaurs, Shadow Wolves and Living Statues, etc. is so reminiscent to me of 80s movies that I loved, like Legend, Labyrinth & Return To OZ. BUT at the same time this one really stands on its own!! I would LOVE to see THIS on this big screen…whoa, that would be awesome!!!

As for characters, they were beautifully written!! Dialogue was written so well that the characters were completely believable and you became totally lost in the story!! I loved Shaleigh, the main protagonist!! She’s very believable. She’s strong, but doesn’t know it. I also loved Colin & Mawr!! Mawr, he is something special. There are so many really great characters, whether good or bad, that are just SO WELL WRITTEN!!!

This is one of those books that once you get into the meat of it, especially when Shaleigh gets kidnapped and taken to the Garden, you can’t put it down!!! YOU WILL SOOO LOVE THIS BOOK, especially if fantasy is your thing!!! I can’t wait for the next book!!!

PART I

FREEFALL

AN EMBARRASSMENT

Shaleigh didn’t think about how much concrete and steel stood over her head as she stepped carefully down the decaying hallway of Ferris Factory. The building had been abandoned for so long that the mildew and fungus ran rampant from the moisture that crept down the crumbling walls, so a respirator was a requirement. Ferris Factory was only two stories tall from the outside, but the floors underground felt endless. The elevator shaft only went down three floors when it had been operational; the rest of the floors could only be reached with the stairs. She doubted any of it had been inspected by the fire marshal.

Her best friend, Kaeja, walked so close behind that she could feel her warm breath on the back of her neck. The only sound that echoed up and down the hallway, besides their footsteps, was the snap of Shaleigh’s camera. The photos were why they risked their lives to explore dangerous places: to document the decrepit. It was thrilling to explore a place that nobody else would see. Eventually all the walls would fall, and Ferris Factory would decay into memory. Shaleigh and Kaeja would have the only remaining proof it even existed, especially since it was clear that nobody was supposed to know about this section of the factory.

A rat skittered out of a heap of moldy paperwork and Kaejatook a deep breath until it passed. “This is the worst one yet. By far.” Shaleigh grinned, though her respirator concealed it. “Come on, we had to come back and take the stairs down. We couldn’t just end it at the base of the elevator.”

“Do you see that?” She swung the flashlight to the side. “I couldn’t even hang a picture on that wall. Four floors down was enough, five floors is just begging to get hurt.”

Kaeja was right, the walls of the hallway curved inward like a bow string. Shaleigh hadn’t noticed how bad it was until she mentioned it. “We’ll be quick.”

She snapped as many photos as she could while Kaeja held the flashlight. It illuminated a good portion of the hall, but the beam had little effect against the thick, sick air. The light ought to have made the place more inviting, but it only made the shadows darker. It was hard for Shaleigh to keep her hands steady for the photos; fear and exhilaration kept combating within her. Sure, this place was terrifying and could collapse at any moment, but the thought of capturing a world that would never been seen again, of documenting the forgotten before it disappeared, made her tap the shutter button of her camera faster. “I wish we had more time. I’d love to look inside some of these rooms.”

“Not me,” Kaeja said, her eyes shadowed by the reflections of the flashlight on her mask. “These halls are creepy enough, thanks.” The light flashed across some metal scraps against the bowed wooden wall. It was hard to tell if it had been left behind by the workers, or if it had fallen from the ceiling. “Didn’t they used to make cars here?”

“Sure, that’s it.” Shaleigh snorted as she tapped on a dirt-encrusted sign that warned visitors that the hallway was a high security corridor. “Whatever helps you sleep at night.”

“It’s an old building, but that doesn’t mean they were hiding anything down here.”

“Then what’s with the high security? They had to be doing something illegal down here. The maps we found don’t even show these floors. I heard it used to be a hospital,”

Shaleigh glanced back to her with a smile. “Dad heard it from a colleague at work. They used to keep dangerous people here.” Kaeja stared at her, the beam from the flashlight in her hands trembling.

A high-pitched squeal of metal echoed down through the insides of the building, as though the entire structure was shifting under its own weight. The squeal turned into a groan that shook the very floor beneath their feet. Both teens froze, barely daring to breathe as debris fell from the ceiling. Seven levels of exhausted steel, wood, and plaster shifted over their heads. They stood in silence waiting for the walls to give way, waiting to be buried beneath the rusty metal beams, discolored linoleum floors, and rat-infested insulation; but the building remained steady.

The noise stopped. Particles drifted in the air.

“It doesn’t sound very good, does it?” Shaleigh whispered.

“I don’t like it. I don’t care what you say, this is the lowest I’m going. Five levels below ground is far enough.”

Shaleigh stifled a laugh, “That’s what you said when we found the stairs.”

A high-pitched noise erupted down the hall causing both teens to jump. It didn’t sound metallic…it didn’t sound like the building at all.

Kaeja stared down the hallway with wide eyes. The noise broke into a whimper, and then there was silence. It only lasted maybe a few seconds, but they both knew what they had heard. Someone was down there with them.

Shaleigh turned to look behind them, but without the flashlight beam it was too dark to see anything. “Was that—was that behind us?”

Kaeja spun around, temporarily blinding Shaleigh in the process. “I don’t know. I thought it came from in front of us.”

The darkness felt like a cage all around them. The beam of the flashlight, darting forwards and backwards down the hall, seemed so small and insignificant now. Someone was in the darkness. Someone was watching them. Shaleighstepped around Kaeja and started back toward the stairwell. “We should go.”

Kaeja grabbed her arm and Shaleigh could feel her clammy fingers through the sleeve of her jacket. “Are you crazy? You said that’s where it came from.”

“How else are we going to get out of here?”

Kaeja could give no argument and shook her head. “Shaleigh…” she whimpered.

“It’s okay, we’ll do it together.” She put her camera around her neck and took Kaeja’s hand. They walked slowly towards the door of the stairwell, side by side, fingers clasped in a death grip.

For a moment, Shaleigh thought she saw movement ahead of them and stopped. Kaeja must have seen it too because she swept her flashlight left and right, searching for whatever it was. Just before the beam of light reached one of the doors, Shaleigh was certain she spotted a shadow move into one of the rooms.

“Ow…” Kaeja whispered giving their joined hands a tug. Shaleigh realized she had been gripping too hard and loosened her hold but didn’t say a word. Her eyes were fixed on where the shadow had been. As they drew closer, an arm stretched out, hairy with long, black fingernails, and pulled the door closed. There was a splash as though something heavy had fallen into a pool of water from behind the door.

Kaeja screamed. A bolt of adrenaline hit Shaleigh and she grabbed Kaeja’s arm. Together they ran. As they passed the door, the knob began to turn with a creak. She wasn’t sure if Kaeja had seen it or not. “Keep going!” she yelled, all pretense of caution forgotten.

Once the stairwell came into view, they sped up. Shaleighslipped on a wet spot and her foot skidded. She would have sprained her ankle if she hadn’t grabbed for the wall. What a stupid way to die, she thought as she regained her footing. She had to keep her head straight, because panicking in an old, decrepit building was a sure way to get hurt or killed by whatever was after them. She forced them to slow down to climb over a pile of broken boards and nails. Shaleighhad thought it odd to have it so close to the stairwell when they’d first come down, but now she saw it as a marker, a warning perhaps, to keep trespassers out. As she helped Kaeja down the opposite side of the rubble, she heard limping footsteps approaching them.

“It’s coming!” Shaleigh cried and together they sprinted for the stairwell. The flashlight bounced beams off the walls.

They hit the metal door like a battering ram, shoving it into the rusted railings of the stairs, causing it to reverberate like a gong up and down the concrete shaft. Shaleigh gripped the metal rail, feeling the flecks of paint come off on her hands, and the raw rust beneath. She exchanged a glance with Kaeja, both trying to catch their breath. The respirator was humid with her breathing and she couldn’t wait to rip it off when they got outside. She looked up the dark stairwell above them and grimaced. There were too many floors between them and safety.

Kaeja gasped and reached out to grab Shaleigh’s arm. Shaleigh stared at her. She thought she could make out footsteps from the hall they just left, but it was so faint it was hard to make out. It could have just been the sounds of the building, but she didn’t want to take any chances. Taking a deep breath, Shaleigh led the way as they started up the stairs.

One floor, two floors, three floors.

Was that the sound of the doorknob beneath them being turned? Kaeja hurried to her side as they continued to climb. Both were audibly gasping now. It wouldn’t take much for their pursuer to know where they went. Shaleigh’sthighs were burning. She could sprint up a flight or two of stairs, but this was tough. It didn’t help that she was already out of breath before they even started climbing.

“What if it’s locked us in?” Kaeja asked between sucking in gulps of air.

Shaleigh didn’t respond. She didn’t want to even consider that option.

They climbed two more flights of stairs. Kaeja reached the door first. They both let out a sigh of relief when the door opened. Panting, they jogged to the main exit, a pair of massive iron doors that looked like they belonged in a mausoleum. Neither of them said a word as they descended the short flight of broken steps to the grass. Shaleigh ripped off her respirator, Kaeja did the same, and they both exchanged grins as they crossed the grass-pocked concrete walkway. It felt good to feel the heat of the day on her skin too. The sun was sinking in the west, but the air was sweet with wild honeysuckle and a light breeze rustled the old oaks. Shaleigh relaxed a bit but could tell by Kaeja’sexpression that she wouldn’t be able to relax until they had left the property completely.

The concrete walkway fell away to tall grass that came up to their hips, as they sidestepped small pine trees that were beginning to take over the lot and moved further away from the building. The chain link fence that surrounded the property sported multiple warning signs for trespassers, though they were faded from exposure. Kaeja pulled back the corner of fencing they had used to get in, and they both climbed through without saying a word. Kaeja paused, took a deep breath, and relaxed her shoulders.

“I know you’ll hate to hear this, Kaeja,” Shaleigh started. “But I think I’m done with Ferris Factory for a while.”

Kaeja laughed. “No complaints here. I’m going to add that we never go underground again either. I am not running up that many stairs again, no matter how great you say the pictures will be.” Shaleigh couldn’t help but laugh. The downtrodden path through the woods made it a short walk to reach the bus stop. Shaleigh unwrapped the scarf from around her head and shook out her twists. The breeze felt wonderful on her scalp. They dropped everything into Shaleigh’s backpack as they walked. The main road was surprisingly empty for a Sunday afternoon. After exploring inside of decomposing buildings for a while, she had new respect for even the simplest things. The bench for the bus stop, covered in graffiti and bearing a single broken board, looked like a luxury.

Kaeja sprawled across the broken wooden bench and covered her eyes with her arms.

“Wow, what a rush!”

“I know!” Despite her smile, Shaleigh still glanced over her shoulder, as though expecting the person from the building to be slinking toward them through the woods.

“What do you think it was?”

Kaeja stared up into the sky. “Someone crazy, I’m sure. It’s a good thing they made some noise. I don’t like the thought of them sneaking up on us like that.” She sat up and patted the bench beside her.

Shaleigh obliged, her legs were still shaky. “Did you see that hand?”

Kaeja shuddered, “Looked like he hadn’t seen the light of day in forever.” She stretched her arms over the back of the bench. “This is exactly why I don’t like the big ones. There are too many hiding places.”

“The small ones aren’t much better,” Shaleigh added. “Sometimes it feels like a shot right out of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, you know?”

Kaeja nodded and the two grew silent from their own nerves. Kaeja’s leg jumped up and down, as though at any moment she would jump up into a sprint. Shaleigh kept resisting the urge to look over her shoulder once more. The bus couldn’t come fast enough.

“Ugh, I need to think about something else.” Kaeja said with a tense smile. “You’ve got a party coming up tonight, don’t you? You get to get all dolled up. I know you don’t like the people much, but I do envy you getting to go.”

Shaleigh sighed. “I had almost forgotten about it.” She checked her watch. It was a good thing they had left when they did because she still needed to get home and clean up. “If you like it so much, you can totally go for me.”

“Your dad would never let me. He needs you there.”

“Unfortunately.”

Kaeja scooted closer and put an arm around her shoulders. “I’m sorry. I guess that is pretty hard on you. Do they ask you a lot of questions about him?”

Shaleigh nodded. She hated the tight feeling she got in her chest whenever she thought of those stupid parties. She hated the fact that she had to go. Why in the world did Roseworth College have so many of them anyway? It was like they wanted to torture her.

Deciding to change the subject, she picked up her camera from around her neck. After checking to make sure nothing had been damaged in their mad dash, she asked, “Want to see the pictures?”

Kaeja nodded but looked concerned. Shaleigh ignored it.

The brilliant light of the flash somehow made the dark halls of Ferris Factory less frightening, less dangerous. If only people were so easy to strip of fear.

About Marlena:461be56c-5ba1-45de-b1c1-2ec07c022b74

I write about strange creatures. Typically they shouldn’t exist, or they have bled through from a different reality, or they’re pretending to be a crying baby in a crib. Sometimes that lands my stories in horror and other times in fantasy, but there’s always an air of strangeness to my tales. If you want to get a better feel for what I’m talking about, check out a few clips or read a few drabbles.

My work has appeared in a spattering of short story collections, but I do have a few novellas and novels in the pipeline. Other than talking about writing, I also talk about cryptozoologywerewolveswildlife conservation, and of course kitties. I’ve also been known to nerd out about Batman and The Hobbit, and have recently discovered the cracktastic fun of Black Butler cosplay, so there will likely be more of these incidents.

By day I work as a web developer, so I’ll occasionally talk about web issues like finding the right theme.

A Standalone Contemporary Romance

#1 New York Times Bestselling Author Vi Keeland

we shouldn't live now square

SYNOPSIS:

Bennett Fox walked into my life on one hell of a crappy Monday morning.

I was late for the first day at my new job—a job I’d now have to compete for even though I’d already worked eight years to earn it, because of an unexpected merger.

While I lugged my belongings up to my new office, a meter maid wrote me a parking summons.

She’d ticketed a long line of cars—except for the Audi parked in front of me, which happened to be the same make and model as mine.

Annoyed, I decided to regift my ticket to the car that had evaded a fine. Chances were, the owner would pay it and be none the wiser.

Except, I accidentally broke the windshield wiper while slipping the ticket onto the car’s window.

Seriously, my day couldn’t get any worse.

Things started to perk up when I ran into a gorgeous man in the elevator. We had one of those brief moments that only happened in movies.

You know the deal…your body lights up, fireworks go off, and the air around you crackles with electricity.

His heated stare left me flushed when I stepped off the elevator.

Maybe things here wouldn’t be so bad after all.

Or so I thought.

Until I walked into my new boss’s office and met my competition.

The gorgeous man from the elevator was now my nemesis. His heated stare wasn’t because of any mutual attraction. It was because he’d seen me vandalize his car. And now he couldn’t wait to annihilate his rival.

There’s a fine line between love and hate—and we shouldn’t cross it.

We shouldn’t—but straddling that line could be so much fun.
