Author Interview:

Sarah, I’m so excited about the release of your third book release of your Dead Dreamer series, To Reap The Spirit! I’m a big fan of the series, and your writing! So having the honor to interview you is such a privilege!! Let’s get started:

1. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

I technically began writing in high school. My stories originally included angels and demons which isn’t surprising considering I was going to a Baptist high school. Thankfully, leaving for college really opened my eyes and helped me grow as a person and a writer.

2. What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

Writing can actually take me to a very dark place. Sometimes I can hit a severe depressive episode while writing. But thankfully it doesn’t last long and it’s usually when I get the best chapters. But now that I have my puppers, Emer, it seems like that is happening less and less. Which is hopefully a good thing.

3. Do you try more to be original or to deliver to readers what they want?

I try to be as original as possible. Personally, I don’t want to do retellings and I hate the idea of taking from someone else. Yes my work is influenced by other cultures and mythologies, but I still tried to rework it all as my own.

4. Do you feel like it’s most important to have A) Strong characters B) Mind-blowing Plot twists or C) Epic settings?

Hmm. That’s a difficult one. You need all three to make a good book. But I’d have to say, in my opinion, strong characters. Without strong characters, who will your readers’ connect to?

5. Do you find it more challenging to write the first book in a series or to write the subsequent novels?

I’d say the most challenging was the first book. I wanted to throw all of the epic plot points into one but that would have been a terrible idea! Now I get to give you all of the fun ideas I’ve had.

6. What is the most difficult part of your artistic process?

Just sitting down and writing. I have ADHD so it’s extremely difficult for me to focus. I really need to be in a dark mood to get the writing done.

7. If you had to describe Brenna Whit in three words, what would those three words be?

Blunt, Stressed, and somewhat mean

8. What do you hope your readers take away from this series?

A strong understanding of nothing is as it seems…and maybe they should go back and read the previous books to find things they missed. As I’ve said before, I wrote everything in a specific order with specific human interactions for a good reason. Nothing is black and white.

9. Do you have any new series planned, after you finish this one?

Not quite yet. I’m looking at some things here and there, but it’s all in the beginning stages. We’ll have to see!

10. What books or authors have most influenced your own writing?

Lynne Ewing was always a favorite of mine as her books were the ones that introduced me to reading in the first place. Other than that, I’d have to point to Lovecract and Maggie Stiefvater.

11. Where online can readers find you and/or learn more about the Dead Dreamer series?

You can always find me at https://dead-dreamer.com/! From there you can find all of my social medias and even my Patreon! I’ll be putting some behind the scenes and extra Dead Dreamer stuff there sometime soon!

My Review:

I have never read a series where each book gets so much better and better, but The Dead Dreamer series is one of a kind! Lampkin’s research and writing, her character development, and her amazing Dead Dreamer world are so well executed!! This series is absolutely amazing and I can’t wait for the next book!!!

There’s so much I’d love to go on and on about, but I don’t want to give anything away. But this book was fantastic!! It was shocking, with all its unexpected twists and turns. Brenna is one of my favorite characters of any series!!! She is strong, sarcastic, loyal and would die for her friends!!! Watching her character grow through the series has been so awesome!! Damon and Aeria are really great characters too, and I’ve loved seeing their character growth as the series has gone along. They are loyal to Brenna and care about her. The three of them are a tight circle of friends. The Dead Dreamer world has grown and developed in completely unexpected and surprising ways!!

If you haven’t started this series yet, I highly recommend you grab the first book and catch up in time for book four to come out!!!!
